Gary Bartz at Frankie’s Jazz Bar

The great saxophonist Gary Bartz returns to Vancouver for his first visit to Frankie’s Jazz Bar on February 22nd and 23rd. Cory Weeds recently tracked down Bartz to ask him a few questions – here are some short comments from the man himself:

In 2012, he recorded a tribute to John Coltrane and here talks about recording Coltrane’s music:

He’s played with everybody from Art Blakey and Miles Davis to a Grammy-winning collaboration with McCoy Tyner. His most recent recording is Heads of State on Smoke Sessions featuring Larry Willis, Buster Williams and Al Foster.

He’s playing Frankie’s Jazz Bar on Monday and Tuesday, February 22nd & 23rd in a quartet featuring Paul Bollenback on guitar, James King on bass, and Greg Bandy on drums.

The next few weeks are crazy busy in terms of how much music there is going on with Ches Smith/Mat Maneri/Craig Taborn, Crossing Borders, Charles Lloyd, Winterruption, Ayelet Rose Gottlieb, Dee Dee Bridgewater & Irvin Mayfield, Ralph Alessi, Champian Fulton, Helen Sung, Laila Biali, Strong Women Strong Music and much much more! Check out the Coastal Jazz website and keep an eye on the A-Trane Calendar for the latest!
